High Blood Pressure Meds - Questions to Ask Your Doctor or Pharmacist and Why

In general, the more you know about your high blood pressure meds, the better results you will get while controlling your blood pressure.

So here are a few questions you need to ask about your blood pressure medications.

1. What are the names of my high blood pressure meds?

- It is a very good habit to know the names of all your meds. This will help you learn more about them by asking questions, listening for any announcements about newly discovered side-effects, recalls etc.

2. How should I take the meds?

- Do not assume that all your high blood pressure meds will be taken in the same way. Some may be taken once a day while others may be taken 2 times or more. Some may be better if taken with meals while others may be better if taken on an empty stomach. Get clear instructions from your doctor or pharmacist so you can get the best results.

3. For how long will I take the meds?

- You may be given some meds for a short while if your doctor intends to change them. But they are often given for much longer. In most cases, you may be required to take your meds for life. Talk with your doctor to get all the details.

4. What are the side effects and/or complications of the meds

- This is a very important point. You NEED to know about the side-effects of the medications prescribed for you. Most meds will have a print-out that contains such information, and if it doesn't, you will be given one. In addition most health care providers will discuss the common and/or important complications and what you should do if you notice any of them.

Have this discussion with your health care provider. It may save your life.

5. Are there any other alternatives to these meds

- It is good to know if there are other alternatives to any of the high blood pressure meds prescribed for you. This is especially important if you feel uncomfortable with any of the side-effects or complications that may arise from taking the prescribed meds. Patients are often afraid to do this because they don't want to be demanding or they don't know they can.

Be free enough to ask, you have a right to do so. And besides, you and your doctor or pharmacist may discover that the new meds are a much better fit for you.

6. Can I ever reduce or increase my medications myself?

- Even though the answer to this question is almost always NO, there may be certain situations where your doctor or pharmacist may consider it safe for you make these decisions. If you are allowed to do this, always remember to keep accurate records and communicate with your doctor or pharmacist in the earliest possible time.

7. Is it safe to take herbal supplements or other natural medicinal products?

- It is always good advice to talk to your health care provider before you take any herbal or nutritional supplements. These products may contain compounds that may worsen your medical condition and/or interact badly with your current medications.

These questions are just a start. Always feel free to discuss your high blood pressure meds with your health care provider. Remember, it starts with knowing the names of the medications prescribed for you.
